On the heels of Ava DuVernay's 13th earning an Oscar nomination for best documentary, Netflix has announced it plans to release a 30-minute special featuring an interview between filmmaker Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey.

13th: A Conversation With Oprah Winfrey & Ava DuVernay will be available to U.S. Netflix subscribers Thursday.

In the sit-down, Winfrey talks to DuVernay about her filmmaking process, her interest in exploring the incarceration of African Americans in the U.S., how she went about getting the expert interviews featured in the doc, the current state of race relations in the U.S., the film's reception worldwide and DuVernay's advice for the Trump administration.

13th, which premiered at the New York Film Festival as its first doc opener ahead of its October Netflix premiere, explores the history of racial inequality in the U.S., specifically how the country produced the highest rate of incarceration in the world, with the majority of those imprisoned being African American.

The doc's title refers to the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, specifically the following progression: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States."

“The truths revealed within 13th are stunning, and a brilliant primer for a much needed global conversation,” Lisa Nishimura, Netflix vp original documentaries said in a statement. “The 13th interview special was born from an organic post-screening discussion between two of the most influential and insightful women in media, Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey, who invite us to share in their personal feelings surrounding one of the most important issues of our time.”

Winfrey produced and appeared in DuVernay's film Selma and serves as executive producer on DuVernay's OWN series Queen Sugar. She also receives a "special thanks" credit on 13th. Additionally, the mogul is among the cast of DuVernay's upcoming A Wrinkle in Time movie.
