Netflix Inks Exclusive Deal to Stream Fox's 'New Girl'
The first season of the Zooey Deschanel TV show debuted Monday with subsequent seasons becoming available after their broadcast run.
Netflix has signed an exclusive deal to stream past seasons of Fox's Zooey Deschanel starrer New Girl.
The first season became available Monday and subsequent seasons will debut after their broadcast run, Netflix and Twentieth Century Fox Television said Monday.
“New Girl has proven to be the biggest breakout sitcom hit of the season, and we are thrilled to be able offer it so quickly to our U.S. subscribers,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “We know our members love comedies and that they’ll enjoy watching all the current and future episodes of New Girl whenever and wherever they want.”
Gina Brogi, executive vp worldwide pay television and subscription video on demand for Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution added, "As a leader in digital distribution, Netflix is an important partner for us. We are thrilled to continue building our relationship with them."
Amid increased competition from rival streaming services like Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and HBO Go, Netflix is reportedly trying to secure exclusive deals for shows that resonate with subscribers.
It has also begun investing in and streaming original content like House of Cards, the latest season of Arrested Development and Orange Is the New Black, which was renewed last week ahead of its July 11 debut.
Fox renewed New Girl for a third season in March, two months ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers. Fox touted New Girl as the No. 1 comedy among women 18 to 34. The show is produced by Chernin Entertainment in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television.
