New CBS pilots follow exorcist, '70s swing set

Dramas about an exorcist and 1970s swinging couples have been picked up to pilots by CBS.

Both shows, produced by CBS Paramount Network TV, fit into the new creative direction CBS has taken this development season with nontraditional, often risky concepts.

"Demons," from "Joan of Arcadia" creator Barbara Hall and producer Joe Roth, centers on an ex-Jesuit priest/psychologist who performs exorcisms.

Hall penned the script for the project, originally picked up by CBS in the summer with a put pilot commitment (HR 8/16).

She is executive producing with Roth and Roth TV president Nina Lederman.

"Swingtown," from writer/ executive producer Mike Kelley (Fox's "The O.C."), explores the concept of open marriages and couple-swapping practiced by suburban couples in '70s.

The pilot will be directed by "Six Feet Under" executive producer Alan Poul.  Poul is also an executive producer of "Demons."
