New Line Options Inspirational Memoir 'Napkin Notes' (Exclusive)

A dad battling cancer writes one note per day to his daughter

In a preemptive deal, New Line Cinema has optioned the film rights for the upcoming inspirational memoir Napkin Notes.

Garth Callaghan began writing short notes on napkins and putting them in his daughter's lunch when she was in kindergarten. It became a daily ritual, and a special way to connect with his young daughter, Emma. The practice took on special meaning for Callaghan when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

Since then, he's been diagnosed with cancer four times and been given an 8 percent chance to live long enough to watch Emma graduate from high school. He's determined to write a total of 826 notes, which will give his now-teenage daughter one note for each day through high school — no matter what happens.

Napkin Notes: Make Lunch Meaningful, Life Will Follow will hit shelves on Oct. 28 via HarperCollins. Callaghan introduces each chapter with a napkin note and then shares a story connected to it and to his life. The book is described as an inspiring tale on family, love and making every day count.

Sources say there was a lot of interest in the project, and New Line was hot on it, moving quickly to snap it up. Toby Emmerich, Andrea Johnston and Richard Brener are overseeing Napkin Notes for New Line.

CAA, which represents Callaghan, brokered the deal with HarperCollins as well as the deal with New Line.
