When you're as talented as Badu on the turntables, there's no need to prep for a list of party tunes. She just knows what's up.

When you've got Erykah Badu on the turntables at a fashion soirée, it's a no brainer that the music is going to get the crowd in the mood to party. From playing old-school favorites ("The Breaks" by Kurtis Blow) to today's hip-hop jams ("Clique" by Kanye West, Jay Z and Big Sean), Badu (aka DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown) had partygoers at Fendi's New York store opening party on Madison Avenue singing along or getting down with the music. So how does the artist prepare such a poppin' playlist for an event like this?

"I don't prepare. I've never prepared a playlist in my life" Badu, clad in all Fendi and a pair of bright yellow Beats x Fendi headphones, told Pret-a-Reporter. "I just pick randomly, going with the vibration of the music." Karl Lagerfeld, Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Hailee Steinfeld, Hailey Baldwin, Zoe Kravitz and Rosario Dawson were among the many A-listers to fete the evening's celebration.

As if fate would have it, Badu first discovered Fendi when she was a DJ in high school when a performer came into town and "he had dancers come out and one of them was named Fendi because they were all from New York so [...] they were all wearing Fendi in 1983. It's always been a very untouchable brand."

While Badu is best known as a performance and music artist ("I'm working on a couple of albums right now," she shared), she doesn't mind adding fashion designer to her resume.

"Absolutely. I would start with hats and jewelry," Badu said, matching her gold nails with a Lillian Shalom-designed Galileo ring and another one she collaborated on with Shalom. As for the self-designed hat she wore while spinning? She quipped, "This was way before Pharrell's hat."
