HDNet gets in the cage

HDNet, Mark Cuban's high-definition network, is entering the mixed martial arts arena with a business dubbed HDNet Fights. The first event is Oct. 13 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, with the on-air debut set for Oct. 19. Cuban has hired former UFC champion Guy Mezger to head up fight operations for the company. While HDNet has aired MMA events before, this will be the first venture into the MMA business for Cuban and HDNet. HDNet also is debuting a new series, "Inside MMA," hosted by Kenny Rice and former MMA fighter Bas Rutten, at 9:30 tonight.



A third 'Daily' term for Clinton

President Clinton is scheduled to make his third appearance on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" on Thursday. The interview will be posted for viewing the next day at www.comedycentral.com and www.indecision2008.com. Clinton was a guest on the show in August 2004 and September 2006.



Investors like AMC sequel

Shares of movie theater operators rose Thursday after AMC Entertainment, the nation's second-largest theater chain, filed again for an initial public offering. Shares of Carmike Cinemas led the pack, rising 3.2% to $18.63. AMC said late Wednesday that it plans to raise about $469.1 million in an IPO, according to a regulatory filing. The company's predecessor, Marquee Holdings, filed for an IPO in April but suspended the planned offering a month later citing unfavorable market conditions. The company formally withdrew the offering in June.



The Danes are coming

The Danish Film Festival will return to Los Angeles from Oct. 4-11, starting with an opening-night screening of Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 film "La passion de Jeanne d'Arc," featuring a new score. This year's festival will commemorate 100 years of Danish cinema and feature screenings at the Laemmle Sunset 5 of such films as "Hunger," "Pelle the Conqueror" and "Babette's Feast," as well as recent works like Lars von Trier's "The Boss of It All."



Red-carpet ringtone for E!'s Emmycast

NEW YORK — Comcast Corp.'s E! Entertainment Television will present its Emmy Awards red-carpet special live Sunday on Sprint phones, the network said Thursday. "Live From the Red Carpet: The 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards" will be simulcast from 6-8 p.m. EDT on Sprint's mobile TV service on its Power Vision phones as well as on E!'s broadband channel, the Vine @ E! Online, and on the Pivot wireless cable service. This marks the first time that E! will simulcast content on mobile phones.



Ratnam, Hawke in Turks and Caicos fest

Mani Ratnam's "Lora" and Ethan Hawke's "The Hottest State" will be among the lineup of 28 films to be screened Oct. 16-21 at the Turks and Caicos International Film Festival on the island of Providenciales. Ratnam has been selected to receive the Directors Excellence Award.
