Three-firm d-cinema deal for Technicolor

Technicolor Digital Cinema has signed agreements with Clearview Cinemas, IPic Entertainment and Cinemaworld to install digital-projection systems as part of its North American digital-cinema equipment deployment program. Clearview Cinemas is a Chatham, N.J.-based exhibitor that operates 50 theaters with 254 screens. Vero Beach, Fla.-based Cinemaworld operates 32 screens in Florida and Rhode Island. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based IPic Entertainment is a young company whose first location is scheduled to open next month in the Milwaukee suburb of Glendale. Additional locations are under development in California, Texas, Illinois, Ohio and Florida. Each installation will feature Technicolor's networked technology, which includes a satellite system for content delivery and the Technicolor Theatre Management System. Technicolor is a Thomson brand.



Golden Bear roars for Rosi

COLOGNE, Germany — Franceso Rosi, one of the giants of Italian cinema, will be honored Feb. 14 with a lifetime achievement Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival. The 58th Berlin fest, set for Feb. 7-17, will feature an homage of 13 Rosi films, including "Salvatore Giuliano," the film that won the best director Silver Bear in Berlin in 1962 and marked Rosi's international breakthrough.



Discovery launches new Investigation

Discovery Times Channel is renaming itself Investigation Discovery starting Jan. 27. The rebranding comes nearly two years after the New York Times Co. announced its intent to sell back its 50% stake in the network to Discovery (HR 4/17/06). "The programming will stay largely the same as it has the last nine months or so, but the new name puts the focus on the investigative nature of the channel," network president and GM John Ford said. Investigation Discovery will unveil its full programming lineup, new logo, on-air branding campaign and new Web site in early January.



HBO brings NFL fans to 'Life'

NEW YORK — HBO is launching "Fan Life," a series of short films about NFL superfans available exclusively on its digital platforms, the Time Warner-owned premium cable channel said Tuesday. "Fan Life," which will run in eight three- to six-minute segments, can only be streamed on HBO.com or downloaded through HBO Mobile and HBO Podcasts. The series debuted Nov. 20 with a segment on a Kansas City Chiefs fanatic and a new episode will premiere every Tuesday through January.



Goldberg in TLC's communications biz

Media industry veteran Laurie Goldberg has been named senior vp communications at TLC, where she will oversee all programming publicity, business and executive media strategy. She will be based at TLC's headquarters in Los Angeles, reporting to TLC president and GM Angela Shapiro-Mathes and executive vp marketing Regina DiMartino.



Worldwide Biggies stays in vid game

SAN DIEGO — Worldwide Biggies has inked a two-year extension agreement to continue as executive producer of Spike TV's annual "Video Game Awards." The fifth annual "Video Game Awards" is set for Dec. 9 and will feature nominated titles including "Halo 3" and "BioShock" as well as previews and first looks of highly anticipated upcoming games.
