News, game, drama drive eyes to CBS

With ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" done for the season and "Desperate Housewives" in repeats this week, CBS won the week ending Sunday in primetime in viewership and the adults 18-49 demographic.

The Eye came in two-tenths of a rating point ahead of ABC in adults 18-49 thanks to strong ratings from the New England Patriots-Pittsburgh Steelers NFL game that spilled into primetime Sunday as well as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "60 Minutes" putting up big numbers.

The week started off with a win for NBC, with the steady "Chuck" (8.4 million, 3.2/8) plus the cycle finale of "Heroes" (11.1 million, 5.0/11) beating repeats on CBS as well as ABC's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (8.5 million, 2.9/7) and sitcoms "Samantha Who?" (7.2 million, 2.9/6) and "Notes From the Underbelly" (5 million, 2.2/5).

With Fox's "House" in repeats, Tuesday was a tie between CBS and NBC, with the Eye's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (14.5 million, 5.1/14) winning early in the night and NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" (11.7 million, 4.0/10) winning at 10 p.m.

Wednesday went to ABC with "Private Practice" (10.4 million, 3.8/10).

Thursday also went to ABC, thanks to "Grey's Anatomy" (17.8 million, 7.1/17) winning head-to-head against "CSI" (18.9 million, 5.5/13) and ABC winning again at 10 p.m. with the "Barbara Walters Presents: 10 Most Fascinating People" special (11.3 million, 4.4/12). CBS' "Survivor: China" (13.9 million, 4.5/12) won at 8 p.m.

Friday in adults 18-49 went to CBS, whose holiday programming beat original dramas on ABC and NBC as well as unscripted fare. Even without football, ABC won Saturday in the demo with the movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" (7 million, 2.4/8).

Even with the Patriots-Steelers boost, it wasn't enough for CBS to win Sunday night in primetime. That honor went to NBC, whose "Sunday Night Football" (12.7 million, 4.9/12) was the night's top program, while ABC's "Oprah Winfrey Presents: Mitch Albom's For One More Day" (12.5 million, 3.2/8) came in further behind and dropped in the demo from its lead-in, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (12.8 million, 4.4/10).

CBS (10.5 million, 3.1/8) led the week in viewership and adults 18-49, followed by ABC (8.8 million, 2.9/8), NBC (8.1 million, 2.9/8), Fox (6.3 million, 2.3/6) and the CW (2.6 million, 1.0/3).
