Newsweek's Mark Miller Joins THR as Deputy Editorial Director; Matthew Belloni Upped to Executive Editor
Mark Miller, director of editorial operations at Newsweek/Daily Beast, has joined The Hollywood Reporter as deputy editorial director.
Additionally, news director Matthew Belloni has been promoted to executive editor, while Alison Brower, interim editor-in-chief of Seventeen, will be joining THR as special projects editor.
Miller starts his new role immediately and will report to THR editorial director Janice Min.

As editorial director of Newsweek and editor of Newsweek Digital while the magazine was still owned by The Washington Post Co., Miller oversaw key aspects of both the domestic and international print editions, as well as all digital properties including Newsweek.com. He developed digital editorial strategy, top edited arts and culture coverage, managed budget operations and negotiations with the newspaper labor union and set editorial standards and ethical policies.

Miller began his career at Newsweek as a Washington, D.C.-based reporter when circulation was around 3 million. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming arts and entertainment correspondent from 1990-91 and then, in 1992, political/White House correspondent, helping Newsweek earn a National Magazine Award for his exclusive, behind-the-scenes coverage of Bill Clinton's presidential campaign.
Miller went on to become national correspondent and then L.A. bureau chief, where he oversaw entertainment industry coverage, including extensive focus on the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. He later was West Coast editor, overseeing pop culture and entertainment and, after that, was chief of correspondents during and after 9/11, for which he coordinated National Magazine Award-winning coverage of the attacks and the Afghanistan war.
Miller also served as editor of The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit news site based in Austin and focused on Texas politics and public policy in 2011.
Belloni, an editor and reporter at THR since 2006, will join executive editor Owen Phillips in sharing that title. Belloni edits the business news coverage in print and online and will take on an expanded role at the magazine and website. He also will continue to oversee THR's legal blog, THR, Esq., and will report to Min. Belloni, a graduate of UC Berkeley and USC Law School, practiced entertainment law in Los Angeles before starting his career in journalism.
"In addition to his unparalleled newsroom instincts, Matt has helped steer the news coverage of THR and built the industry's most eagerly watched blog on the intersection between law and entertainment," Min said. "He's helped move THR forward into uncharted territory and will continue to do so in his new role as executive editor."
Said Belloni: "For nearly seven years, The Hollywood Reporter has been my editorial home. I've grown with it, and now, as THR becomes bigger and better, I'm looking forward to continuing this amazing trajectory as a THR journalist."
Brower has served in leading editorial roles for such publishing brands as Redbook, where she was executive editor from 2005-10, and O Magazine, where she was special projects editor.
"Alison has one of the best eyes in the business for creating content that connects readers to publications with special issues, events and partnerships," Min said. "Her ability to coordinate multiple factors that elevate both editorial and the brand will be key to THR."
As special projects editor of O Magazine, Brower co-edited, managed and wrote the special issue commemorating 25 years of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
As executive editor of Redbook, Brower oversaw editorial content including issue themes, story lineup, news features and position pieces. She spearheaded key brand events like the magazine's Strength & Spirit Awards gala and developed partnerships with leading national retailers and media networks.
"The Hollywood Reporter has shown that it's much more than an entertainment news or commentary outlet," Brower said. "It's a way of life, a culture and a community. That's what's exciting about THR, and why this position represents so many opportunities for development and innovation."
Brower also has been deputy editor at Glamour, where she was the lead editor on the magazine's annual Women of the Year Awards, as well as senior articles and books editor at Cosmopolitan.
The award-winning Hollywood Reporter just celebrated its two-year anniversary since its relaunch under Min.
THR.com's traffic is now at 9 million uniques (comScore total universe, November 2012), and an interactive iPad edition was launched last month.
