Michael Shannon also is on the call sheet.

Talk about an electrifying cast.

X-Men star Nicholas Hoult is in talks to join Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon in The Weinstein Co. period drama The Current War.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is helming the project, which tells of the infamous Thomas Edison-George Westinghouse feud. It was penned by playwright-screenwriter Michael Mitnick.

The Current War takes place in the late 1880s and follows Edison (Cumberbatch), who championed direct current (DC) for electric-power distribution over alternating current (AC), which was backed by several European companies and Westinghouse Electric. Shannon will play Westinghouse.

In a supporting role, Hoult will play Nikolai Tesla, the famous Serbian engineer who worked for both Edison and Westinghouse.

TWC will finance the film and release it domestically.

Hoult stars as Hank McCoy, aka Beast, in the popular X-Men movies and also did scene-stealing work in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. He recently wrapped a turn as J.D. Salinger in indie drama Rebel in the Rye.

Hoult is repped by UTA and 42 in the U.K.
