Michelle Obama Receives Standing Ovation; Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Win Big at Kids’ Choice Awards
Nickelodeon’s 25th annual Kids' Choice Awards featured plenty of star power, with Will Smith hosting and Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Johnny Depp battling for coveted blimp statues. But the night’s biggest crowd pleaser wasn’t a teen heartthrob or a film star.
First Lady Michelle Obama received a standing ovation as she presented Taylor Swift with the Big Help Award, which Swift received for raising money for tornado and flood victims in the United States. The cheering crowd drowned out Obama as she spoke.
Obama said Swift has "shattered every expectation of what a twenty-year-old can accomplish."
The first lady’s presence necessitated guests going through metal detectors, which hadn’t been the case at previous ceremonies.
Obama avoided getting a mess on her stylish metallic-looking jacket, but no Kids’ Choice Awards could be complete without someone getting covered in green slime. Twilight star Taylor Lautner was a casualty halfway through the show, and Smith and Bieber were covered in goo at the show’s close.
