Kobe Bryant Doused in Golden Slime at Kids' Choice Sports Awards
Russell Wilson, Ciara, Zendaya, Rob Gronkowski, Cam Newton, Tony Hawk and members of the NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers were among those who participated in the Nickelodeon event, which will air on Sunday night.
On Thursday night the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards took place at UCLA, entertaining the thousands of children in attendance and providing a respite from the tragic Bastille Day attack in France that occurred earlier that evening.
During the Russell Wilson-hosted event, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cam Newton and Kobe Bryant were honored, with the recently retired Lakers star receiving the "Legend Award." Michael Strahan also got the athletes in attendance to compete in challenges like human bowling and modified versions of a pie-eating contest and basketball shootout. And, as is often the case with Nickelodeon's awards shows, there was a lot of slime raining down from the ceiling.
Before the awards ceremony began, guests walking the orange carpet shared who they wanted to see get slimed.
"I want everybody to get slimed," said New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia.
WWE's Nikki Bella, meanwhile, told The Hollywood Reporter her choice would be Ronda Rousey. Brie Bella said she hoped her sister would get slimed.
The ceremony itself started off by honoring the 2016 NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson appeared in person onstage, with LeBron James chiming in via video, thanking fans and the city of Cleveland for their support throughout the playoffs. James also insisted that the first person slimed that night should be Wilson. The Seattle Seahawks QB tried to assert his authority as host and get out of a green sludge shower, but was hit with slime anyway.
The first award given out was "The King of Swag" prize, given to Newton, who put the "dab" to rest with a final performance of the celebration when he accepted the award.
Later Bryant accepted the "Legend Award" from Zendaya, who talked about the influence the Lakers star had on her life before a video montage of his NBA career was shown. In his acceptance speech, Bryant told kids to never let anybody crush their dreams and thanked his wife and two daughters. He was then immortalized in golden slime.
In between awards, Strahan got the athletes attending the show to compete against one another in various sports-like games. Tony Hawk and Jagger Eaton participated in human bowling, an event where the skaters raced around the stadium toward a huge plastic ball filled with slime that rolled down a ramp with giant pins at the end. Eaton just barely beat Hawk.
The Bella twins, Jamie Anderson, Emmanuel Sanders, Andre Caldwell and Victor Espinoza, meanwhile, took part in a slime pie eating contest. Sanders won with the interesting strategy of spreading the pie all over his face while eating it.
Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson had a three-point slime basketball shootout, in which kids standing under the net had slime rain down on them as the ball went through the net. Curry won 5-2. New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and singer Ciara also battled it out in a dance off. It was a fierce struggle until a disguised Wilson showed up and helped Gronk defeat his wife with a little help from some moves that the "One, Two Step" singer might be familiar with.
The Kids' Choice Sports Awards airs Sunday (July 17) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon.
