Nicki Minaj Sued by Wig Guru for Stealing Designs
The rapper has been accused by wig creator Terrence Davidson of stealing his designs and passing them off as her own.
Nicki Minaj is being sued by her former "wig guru" for allegedly taking his designs, then selling and licensing them without giving him a share of the huge profit.
Now seeking $30 million in damages, Terrence Davidson alleges that the 31-year-old singer stole the hair creations that he personally designed for her, and that her management team also discouraged him from taking a multimillion-dollar reality show deal, telling him that it would damage his relationship with Minaj.
According to the legal documents filed at an Atlanta courthouse on Friday, Davidson says his designs for the rapper — whose real name is Onika Maraj — were "fresh, unique and highly distinguishable."
The lawsuit alleges that in September 2010, Davidson created several pink wigs for Minaj to wear in her performance at the MTV VMAs preshow, including the "pink upper bum wig," along with numerous colorful creations that she went on to don at high-profile events and performances.
Minaj is now selling her own line of wigs on the website MyPinkFriday.com, in response to which Davidson says he was cut out of "the wig venture" as she pursued it on her own.
The pair began working together in 2010, reported Time, with the "Super Bass" singer's outrageous hair helping to cement her transformation to hip-hop stardom.
According to Time, Christopher Chestnut, an attorney for Davidson, said: "Her lawyers may complicate it, but we don’t need to get into intellectual-property law. This is basic American morality. Nicki Minaj lied to this man and cheated him."
He plans to seek at least $30 million in damages for Davidson if the case goes to trial. "It’s a classic David versus Goliath situation," said Chestnut.
