Nielsen dials up ringtone unit

Nielsen Mobile, a division of Nielsen Entertainment, is launching Nielsen RingScan to monitor the growing U.S. ringtone market.

Nielsen RingScan will issue a weekly report of polyphonic, master and voice ringtone sales. The data will serve as the basis of Billboard's Hot RingMasters chart, which will debut in this week's issue of the magazine, dated Dec. 9.

The Hot RingMasters chart will comprise weekly sales of the top 20 master tones (ringtones that actually play a segment of an original musical recording). It will appear every other week in the magazine and be updated weekly on Billboard.biz and Billboard.com.

Billboard has tracked polyphonic ringtones since 2004, when it inaugurated its Hot Ringtones chart.

Said Nielsen Mobile general manager Paul Leakas: "Given the impressive and rapid growth of the ringtone market, the industry has turned to Nielsen to provide the needed tools to track and maximize the real potential. In just a few short years, we have witnessed the birth of the multibillion-dollar worldwide ringtone market and a great demand for accurate measurement."
