Nielsen taps Mika as THR publisher, vp
EmptyEric Mika has been named vp and publisher of The Hollywood Reporter as part of a series of senior leadership roles unveiled Wednesday by the newly created Entertainment Group at Nielsen Business Media.
In addition to the promotion of Mika, the company appointed Howard Appelbaum vp and publisher of Billboard and Andrew Bilbao vp and COO of the Entertainment Group.
All three report to Gerry Byrne, who was named senior vp of the Entertainment Group on Feb. 27. John Kilcullen, who was senior vp of the Film & Performing Arts and Literary & Music groups as well as publisher of The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard, left the company at the end of the month.
As vp and publisher of The Reporter, Mika will be responsible for all aspects of the brand, including day-to-day leadership of the sales, marketing, operational and editorial teams, brand development and P&L management. He also will drive strategic initiatives across the brand's digital, print and face-to-face properties, developing cross-platform initiatives that expand upon The Reporter's leadership in the global entertainment community.
"At a time when publications generally are retreating, THR is investing and expanding," Mika said. "Our owners and the Nielsen Co. are fully committed to the brand, and with a superb leadership team now firmly put in place, led by THR's editor Elizabeth Guider and associate publisher Rose Einstein, I am absolutely delighted to be given the reins of such a venerable brand. Over the last several months the team has worked hard to make THR the largest total distribution of any entertainment daily, and we are not going to stop there. I am very excited about THR's ambitions. Core to our values is to continually better serve the readers and the advertisers in all markets across platforms, and on a global basis."
A publishing industry veteran with more than two decades in the business, Mika joined Nielsen Business Media in January 2007 as senior vp and managing director, international, and was promoted to senior vp and publishing director in April.
During his time with Nielsen, Mika has been key to The Reporter's overall strategy and building its new management team. He was instrumental in the launch of The Reporter's Premier Edition, the national day-and-date edition for the East Coast, and market/festival dailies in Pusan, Dubai, American Film Market, Berlin and Hong Kong. He also launched international newsletters and the new THR-Asia.com.
Before joining Nielsen, Mika was vp and managing director at Variety, where he oversaw business operations in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. He spent 13 years at Variety during two separate stints in which he launched print and electronic products throughout Europe and Asia and was responsible for Variety China and its domestic market strategy in Beijing.
Between stints at Variety, Mika was senior vp at a Vivendi Universal company, where he launched five VU digital sales and marketing companies throughout Europe, integrating content and distribution technologies. In 2003, he co-founded the BCMA, Branded Content Marketing Assn., in London, and in 2004 he co-founded the GSMA Content Advisory Board. He is a member of the Paley Center and is on the board of the Creative Coalition.
