Baja East Designers Campaign For Hillary Clinton in "Be With Her" Tees

Baja East kept it hot for spring 2017. Almost too hot.

On Friday evening, designers Scott Studenberg and John Targon invited guests — including Teyana Taylor (Kanye West's music video muse for "Fame"), Sophia Bush, Jamie Chung and Chanel Iman — to a humid parking garage in the Financial District, where they showed their latest gender-neutral designs on the first floor. As you can imagine, it got pretty stuffy. Practically everyone was using show notes as a fan.

But that was their intention.

"It was this whole idea of making something that's so street and concrete and has a lot of grit in it and bringing in this paradise," Targon tells Pret-a-Reporter backstage as models were getting touched up (probably to make sure the makeup stayed put!). Adds Studenberg, "Sweaty, sexy, grit."

The collection featured their signature slouchy silhouettes, tie-dye ponchos and skirts, and palm-print swimwear, as well as their Minions-inspired pieces (tees inspired by the film, featuring the silly yellow characters and hats with banana and palm leaf prints) that are now available for purchase on baja-east.com. After the show, guests were welcome to buy select Minions merch, courtesy of a "see now, buy now" van that was set up at the afterparty, held at the same parking structure but on the fourth floor. "They're fun and mischievous and we're fun and mischievous,"  Targon says.

Clad in their new "Be With Her" tees (the "Be" is in the style of their logo, playing on the initials of their brand as well as the verb), which will be available for purchase in the about two weeks on their site, the dynamic duo aren't hiding their support for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. (And neither are their peers Joseph Altuzarra, Public School's Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne and Marc Jacobs, who are among the growing list of fashion designers to have made custom t-shirts as part of Clinton's campaign).

"We need Hillary elected and we need everyone to vote," says Studenberg.

So, why Clinton? "I think she's right for what's going to happen in the next four years — we care about what's going to happen," Targon says. "It's also f—kin' time for a woman to be in office." Adds Studenberg, "Let's have someone who has experience to be in office, not someone who has experience doing nothing and won't even show us his tax returns."

Bush, who sat front row at the show, agrees.

"I stand very openly and outspokenly on the election — I am 157 percent with her," says the Chicago P.D. actress, clad in a cream blazer, sports bra and a combo drape skirt and pants.

You can bet she's been showing her support for Clinton on her sleeve, too. "I've been wearing a lot of fantastic Hillary gear by my talented friends," she notes of her pals at La Ligne, who designed a shirt that reads "je suis avec elle" (French for "I'm with her").

As for trying to survive the heat in her Baja East pantsuit, she says "it's worth it" for her friends.
