NYFW Beauty: Adam Selman's French Mani 2.0

For his fall '14 show, Rihanna's costume designer commissioned an updated French from manicurist-to-the-stars Madeline Poole. And she used more than just nail polish to make it happen.

In the middle of Rihanna costume designer Adam Selman's sophomore presentation on Thursday, we couldn't help but zoom in on the arty manicure sported by his super girls. Turns out the creation was again designed by L.A.-based, Nailing Hollywood manicurist-to-the-stars Madeline Poole, who last season painted Selman's show with swipes of solid red.

"I wanted to convey the spirit of the collection," the chic blondette, who has clients in Kate Bosworth and Miley Cyrus, explained to Pret-a-Reporter backstage.

"Adam got inspired by the story of a lost and retrieved jewelry box in the French Alps during a 1950 crash on a New York to Bombay flight. I looked at the beautiful traditional Indian henna tattoos and I wanted to interpret it in a way that could inspire the New York downtown girl."

It's safe to say that Poole's idea of Selman's particular breed of downtown girl -- who on this day looked like she stepped out of a Roy Lichtenstein painting in splatter-painted overalls, oversized red shirt dresses and pop art polka dots -- likes to get creative with her cosmetics, as nail polish wasn't the only material used to make this finger magic happen.

"I tried many eyeliners," Poole said of the skin swipe on each model's finger. "Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($20) proved itself the most reliable."

As for the rest?

"I added my own take on the French Manicure, with the Chanel Nail Colour Polish Black Satin ($27). Et voila!"
