Celebrity hairstylist Guido Palau walks us through the Bjork-inspired bun knots.

The mini buns at Marc by Marc Jacobs’ spring 2015 runway show on Tuesday, which saw actresses Bella Thorne and Tennessee Thomas in the front row, gave us flashbacks to Miley Cyrus circa 2013. Models sported mohawks made of small twists that were “young and cute, a fun take on the late ‘80s rave culture the collection references,” said hairstylist Guido Palau. He added that “the Icelandic singer Bjork also inspired the little bun knots.”

The resulting vibe was punkish and tough and also innocent, he said. And the ‘do was relatively simple to accomplish.

First, Palau used Redken Wind Blown Dry Finishing Spray to texturize the hair. The look didn’t necessitate hair dryers, which he said was nice and created a calm environment. Next, the celeb stylist split hair into four sections from the front to back, securing them into tight ponytails. One by one, he twisted them into buns, making sure some ends stuck out, and secured them with hairpins.

Right before the models walked out, Palau planned to wet his fingers and “pull out baby hairs at the hairline so they’ll be stuck to the face and feel a bit sweaty, like they’ve been dancing.”

While pros created the looks at the show, these buns are pretty easy to do at home. “You don’t have to make perfect sections,” said Palau. “Just make sure they’re kind of in a row. With this kind of hair the more mistakes the more charming it is — all the nuances and mistakes make it young and innocent.”
