Octavia Spencer Joins Shailene Woodley in 'Insurgent'
Robert Schwentke is directing the sequel to "Divergent," also starring Theo James, Kate Winslet and Ansel Elgort.
Octavia Spencer has joined the cast of Insurgent, Lionsgate/Summit’s sequel to its hit YA adaptation Divergent.
Shailene Woodley is returning as the rebellious Tris in the movie to be directed by Robert Schwentke. Theo James and Kate Winslet are also returning as love interest Four and the villainous leader of the Erudite faction, respectively.
Spencer will play Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction.
Lionsgate will release Insurgent on March 20, 2015. The third and fourth films in the series, Allegiant: Part 1 and Allegiant: Part 2, are slated for release on March 18, 2016, and March 24, 2017, respectively.
Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing along with Pouya Shahbazian. The script is by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman, adapted from the book series by Veronica Roth.
Divergent has grossed over $252 million worldwide. Lionsgate says that book sales of the Divergent trilogy have surged to nearly 22 million copies worldwide, up from 17 million at the time of the movie’s March 21 release.
Spencer, who won an Oscar for her work in The Help, next appears in Snowpiercer. She is repped by WME and Jackoway Tyerman.
