Octavia Spencer, Karyn Kusama Among Sundance Lab Advisers
The Sundance Institute has selected eight first-time feature filmmakers for their directing lab.
The Sundance Institute has selected their filmmakers for this year's directing and screenwriting labs, with projects coming from Cuba, Chile, Kenya and the U.S.
The participants in this year's directing lab are Radha Blank, Aleem Khan, Francisca Alegria, Reinaldo Marcus Green, Tayarisha Poe, Brett Weiner and Emma Fletcher, Hannah Pearl Utt and Grainger David.
Cory Miller, Colman Domingo, Amirah Tajdin, Clea DuVall, Marcos Díaz Sosa and Lyle Mitchell Corbine, Jr. are the writers chosen for the screenwriting lab.
Sundance founder Robert Redford and Sundance lab artistic directors Doug Wright and Gyula Gazdag will act as advisers for the lab, along with Rick Famuyiwa, Ed Harris, Karyn Kusama, Ken Kwapis, Ira Sachs, Taylor Sheridan, Octavia Spencer, Dana Stevens and Danny Strong, among many others.
Taking place in Utah's Wasatch Mountains, the monthlong directors lab will see filmmakers rehearse, shoot and edit key scenes from their scripts. The weeklong screenwriters lab focuses on the art and craft of screenplay writing, fostering an environment of support and dynamic inspiration.
The labs are a small part of a year of creative and Industry support, headed by Feature Film Program's Michelle Satter and Labs Director Ilyse McKimmie.
Damien Chazelle, Ryan Coogler, Cary Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Miranda July are among the grads, while five films in this year's Cannes lineup came out of the program, including A Ciambra and Patti Cake$.
