Oklahoma! to Open the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival
The world premiere of a newly restored 4K version of Oklahoma!, the beloved 1955 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, will serve as the opening-night film of the fifth annual TCM Classic Film Festival in April.
Shirley Jones, who made her film debut in the movie after starring on stage in the musical, is scheduled to be on hand for the screening.
The festival takes place April 10-13 in Hollywood and coincides with TCM's 20th anniversary. TCM's Robert Osborne serves as the host.
It was also announced Thursday that Oscar-winning director William Friedkin will attend the screening of the U.S. premiere restoration of his cult classic Sorcerer (1977); Kim Novak will participate in a screening of the charming Bell Book and Candle (1958); Ryan O'Neal will introduce his Depression-era comedy Paper Moon (1973); legendary documentarian Albert Maysles will return to the festival for a screening of Grey Gardens (1975); filmmaker Ira Wohl will be on hand for his Academy Award-winning documentary Best Boy (1979); and three-time Oscar-winning film editor Thelma Schoonmaker will participate in a conversation at Club TCM, the festival's central gathering point.
Earlier, it was announced that actor, filmmaker and humanitarian Jerry Lewis will be honored with a multitiered celebration of his remarkable career that includes a hand/footprints ceremony in the concrete in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre and a screening of The Nutty Professor (1963).
This year's festival also will pay tribute to Quincy Jones and Richard Dreyfuss.
Other films set for screenings include Why Worry? (1923), The Lodger (1927), City Lights (1931), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Gone With the Wind (1939), The Wizard of Oz (1939) in its new Imax 3D format, How Green Was My Valley (1941), Stormy Weather (1943), Double Indemnity (1944), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Godzilla (1954), Touch of Evil (1958), A Hard Day's Night (1964), Mary Poppins (1964) and Blazing Saddles (1974).
