Old Hollywood Turns Out for Richard D. Zanuck Building Dedication at Fox
Shirley MacLaine and legendary agent Fred Specktor were among those joining Lili Fini Zanuck at the event, hosted by Fox studio chief Jim Gianopulos.
In a fitting tribute to the late producer Richard D. Zanuck, a state-of-the art production facility on the 20th Century Fox lot has been named in his honor.
The building isn't far from the theater named after Zanuck's late father and longtime Fox studio chief, Darryl F. Zanuck.
Old Hollywood turned out in force for Tuesday's dedication ceremony of the Richard D. Zanuck Building, including Shirley MacLaine, legendary agent Fred Specktor, Bob Daly and Barbara Davis, widow of former Fox owner Marvin Davis.
"Richard was a true giant of our industry for over five decades. He was family, and an integral part of our legacy. We couldn't find a building worthy of him, so we built one," 20th Century Fox film chairman Jim Gianopulos said before he was joined on the podium by Zanuck's widow and producing partner, Lili Fini Zanuck. They were later joined by Gianopulos' former co-chairman, Tom Rothman.
"We couldn't find a building worthy of him, so we built one," Gianopulos continued.
Richard Zanuck spent his early adulthood working at Fox before being named president by his father at the young age of 28. During the eight years he spent in the top creative job, the younger Zanuck helped shepherd such classics as The Sound of Music and The Planet of the Apes. But he was ultimately fired by his father, only to become a prolific and enduring producer.
His numerous credits include Jaws, the Oscar-winning Driving Miss Daisy and Cocoon. He formed a close relationship with Tim Burton, producing a number of the filmmaker's movies, culminating with Dark Shadows. Zanuck also has a producing credit on Angelina Jolie's upcoming Maleficent.
The new 15,000-foot-square production facility named after Zanuck was designed Gensler Architects and includes a 94-seat theater with ATMOS sound system and projection booth. Bryan Singer is using the facility to edit his upcoming tentpole, X-Men: Days of Future Past.
