Rehab Center Leaders Ousted Following THR Investigation
A judge rules One80 Center's investors were within their rights to remove the married couple who had run the facility, which has come under scrutiny for its client care practices.
Alex Shohet and his wife, Bernadine Fried, the CEO and clinical director of top Hollywood rehab One80 Center, were unseated from their positions Thursday by the facility’s investors at a Los Angeles Superior Court hearing.
The couple had sought a preliminary injunction to prevent their termination. But Judge James C. Chalfant denied it, siding with lead investor Edward Kislinger. In an e-mail sent to staffers following the ruling, Fried wrote: "Alex and I are very sad to let all the One80 staff know that Eddie prevailed in court today. What this means is Alex and I will no longer be up at One80. We poured our heart into One80 and will pray for continued excellent services."
The decision comes on the heels of The Hollywood Reporter’s recent investigation into client care practices at One80 after the deaths of two residents. The day after the story was published on Aug. 7, Kislinger arrived at the facility’s residential headquarters on Summitridge Drive in Beverly Hills and attempted to remove the couple, citing alleged negligence, insurance fraud and assorted instances of misconduct involving internal financial matters.
In a heated exchange, Shohet refused to leave, rejecting the investors’ right to oust them. (Fried was not on the premises at the time.) A chaotic showdown ensued, police were called to the scene, and it was eventually determined that the matter would need to be settled in court.
Also in the aftermath of THR’s article, the LAPD continues to pursue its newly opened probe into the circumstances surrounding two One80 client fatalities that had previously been deemed accidental deaths.
