Content available for Wednesday's launch includes Disney's 'Meet the Robinsons,' 'Bolt' and 'Chicken Little.'

LAS VEGAS -- Online VOD service VUDU plans to lead efforts to stream 3D content to consumers by making 3D studio movies available on its service.

"We see 3D as the next step, and we are excited to make content available to a host of 3D enabled devices this year," VUDU GM Edward Lichty said.

Content available for Wednesday's launch includes Disney's Meet the Robinsons, Bolt and Chicken Little. "In 2011, expect the majority of 3D titles available in theaters to be available in the home," Lichty told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that generally, he expects the VUDU titles to be available day and date with 3D Blu-ray releases.

These movies can be streamed to certain 3D-capable HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players from manufacturers including Funai (Magnavox and Sylvania), LG, Mitsubishi, Philips, Samsung, Toshiba and Vizio, as well as to the PlayStation3 and Boxee.

The titles will be available on a VUDU 3D enabled device, at 480p (SD), 720p and 1080p resolutions. A connection speed between 4½-9 Mbps is suggested.

"The biggest obstacle for the 3D market in the home in the past was the lack of 3D content, where buyers just weren't interested in a feature they couldn't use," Rob Enderle, principal analyst for Enderle Group, said in a statement released by VUDU. "VUDU delivering 3D streaming content directly addresses this challenge."

VUDU is a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart Stores.
