Onyx & Breezy Foundation Sets Humans A-Twittering to Benefit Animals

The organization, named in memory of a couples’ black Labs, counts SAG president Ken Howard and stuntwoman Linda Howard on its board and a range of celebrity supporters.

Cats walk on computer keyboards so often that there’s even special PawSense software to help avoid the havoc that can result – but while animals at the keyboard may not be so helpful for humans, the Onyx & Breezy Foundation is betting that humans at the keyboard might be able to help their four-footed friends a lot. To that end, the non-profit foundation’s “Twitter for the Critters Celebrity Challenge,” which runs through tomorrow, is seeking donations of as little as $5 to support medical facilities, research and treatment for animals in need.

The celebrity twist? Contributors are invited to click on one of five stars – Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus, Peter Facinelli, Kelly Osbourne or Eric Stonestreet – before making their donation. The people that donate under the rubric of the winning celebrity will have their names placed in a drawing to win a custom-designed poster signed by 89 celebrities.

“A portion of the funds raised will go toward purchasing medical equipment for a local rescue right here in L.A.,” stuntwoman Linda Howard, who worked on the poster, told The Hollywood Reporter. She added that a couple of veterinarians were willing to donate their time a few days a week at the shelter and “it would help immensely if they had their own equipment for all the spay/neuters and emergencies that come in.”

Howard’s husband, SAG president Ken Howard, is the all-volunteer foundation’s celebrity spokesman. Both are on the organization’s board.

The non-profit was started in 2004 by Wanda Shefts and Mark Shefts in memory of their two black Labrador retrievers, who died within about a month and a half of each other. Cat lovers take note: among the dozens of organizations receiving grants from the foundation are a number that are feline-specific, as well groups focused on dogs, horses, farm animals and others that seem open to pretty much anything with paws or wings.

Celebrity signers of the poster include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julie Andrews, Judd Apatow, Will Arnett, Alec Baldwin, Drew Barrymore, Jason Bateman, Kathy Bates, Kristin Bauer, Kristen Bell, Julie Benz, Valerie Bertinelli, Earnest Borgnine, Drew Carey, George Clooney, Billy Crystal, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus, Matt Damon, Doris Day, Tony Dennison, Leonardo DiCaprio, Taye Diggs, Phyllis Diller, Robert Downey, Jr., Fran Drescher, Clint Eastwood, Peter Facinelli, Edie Falco, Mark Feurstein, Tina Fey, Johnny Galecki, Jon Hamm, Armie Hammer, Tom Hanks, Sean Hayes, Anjelica Huston, Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Nick Jonas, Shirley Jones, Jane Krakowski, Jane Leeves, Steven Levitan, Donal Logue, Nigel Lythgoe, Luke MacFarland, Wendie Malick, Leslie Mann, Gilles Marini, Audra McDonald, Kevin McKidd, Idina Menzel, Mike Meyers, Helen Mirren, Hal Needham, Kelly Osbourne, Ozzy Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne, Jim Parsons, David Hyde Pierce, Grace Potter, Paula Poundstone, Carl Reiner, Debbie Reynolds, Ryan Reynolds, Joan Rivers, Seth Rogen, Monica Rosenthal, Phil Rosenthal, Kyra Sedgwick, Martin Short, Anna Deavere Smith, Jaclyn Smith, Jill St. John, Eric Stonestreet, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Lea Thompson, Dick Van Dyke, Franklin Vanderbilt, Robert Wagner, Donnie Wahlberg, Diane Warren, Jerry Weintraub, Raquel Welch, Betty White, Vanessa Williams, and Henry Winkler.
