Open Road Films Acquires 'Killer Elite' as Its First Release (Cannes)
Tom Ortenberg’s Open Road Films has acquired U.S. rights to Killer Elite, starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro. The action thriller will be the newly launched distributor’s first release, hitting theaters in the fall.
Financed by Omnilab Media, the inspired-by-real-life film follows a special-ops agent as he tries to rescue a former mentor while doing battle with a deadly group of ex-British Special Air Service soldiers. Gary McKendry directed.
Michael Boughen produced through Omnilab’s Australian production arm Ambience Entertainment, along with Sigurjon Sighvatsson, Steve Chasman and Tony Winley.
“Killer Elite is a fantastic, adrenaline-rush movie with a stellar cast,” said Ortenberg. “As one of the highest profile, big budget independent films available for the U.S., I am thrilled to have Killer Elite as Open Road’s premiere release and to extend my long-standing relationship with the team at Omnilab.”
Open Road plans a domestic nationwide release in more than 2000 theaters with a $25 million-plus P&A commitment.
Open Road execs Ortenberg, Elliott Kleinberg and Ben Cotner negotiated the deal with executive producers Matthew Street and Peter D. Graves on behalf of Omnilab. Inferno Entertainment reps the film’s worldwide sales.
Omnilab has recently contributed production or P&A financing to W., The Bank Job, The Messenger and Tomorrow When the War Began.
