Oprah Winfrey Talks Weight, Politics With Gov. Chris Christie
The talk-show titan, currently in South Africa celebrating the first wave of graduates at her school for girls, takes on the brash New Jersey politician in an OWN interview to air Sunday.
Oprah Winfrey's latest political interviewee: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who commiserated with the media mogul over getting mocked for being overweight.
"It didn't bother you?" Winfrey asked during the one-hour interview, scheduled to air Sunday on her Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) at 9 p.m. EST.
"Because let me tell you, when David Letterman was making jokes about me, it bothered me," she said on the buzzy new ratings booster Oprah's Next Chapter, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press. Christie's response: "I think I was girded for it, Oprah, I really do."
He said he's created "a shell about it." In another candid discussion, the tough-talking, brash governor -- a favorite of the Republican party who decided against running for president, instead endorsing Mitt Romney -- opened up about falling in love with wife Mary Pat Christie, whom he met at University of Delaware in the 1980s.
"She was fun in a different way than I'd ever experienced with anybody I'd ever dated. She was very spontaneous," Christie said.
When asked for specifics, he quoted a younger Mary Pat as saying: "Let's go break into the kitchen in the dining hall at college because we smell that they are baking doughnuts for the next morning. So let's sneak in and steal some of the doughnuts now."
In other Winfrey happenings, she was in Henley-on-Klip, South Africa, on Friday to celebrate the first group of students to graduate from her school for underprivileged girls. On Saturday, 72 out of 75 students who began at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007 will receive degrees.
"We're taking a victory lap here, for transformation," Winfrey told the AP. "Every single girl is going to leave here with something greater to offer the world than her body."
