Oscar Doc Contender 'Searching for Sugar Man' Passes $1 Million in Scandinavia
Searching for Sugar Man, the acclaimed music documentary from Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul and one of the 15 titles on the 2013 Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary, has racked up an impressive $1 million in box office revenues in Scandinavia, according to local distributor NonStop Entertainment.
The film, which follows Bendjelloul's quest to uncover the story of 70s singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, whose music became a generational anthem in South Africa, passed the $1 million threshold this weekend, based on receipts from Sweden and Denmark alone. Sugar Man premieres in Norway on Dec. 25 and goes out in Finland in the spring of 2013.
In the U.S., the documentary has earned some $2.9 million for Sony Pictures Classics. Sugar Man, which is just beginning its international run, has earned some $600,000 in the U.K. for StudioCanal and more than $500,000 in Australia for Madman.
