Oscar Gown-Inspired Cocktails to Sip on Sunday
Hollywood restaurant Paley is stirring up spirits inspired by iconic red-carpet dresses, for one night only.
In celebration of the 2017 Oscars, Paley (6115 Sunset Boulevard) is serving an exclusive cocktail menu ($15 per cocktail) inspired by iconic looks of past best-dressed attendees. Think Halle Berry’s stunning berry-hued Elie Saab from 2002 and Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Ralph Lauren ball gown from 1999.
The menu was created in honor of the restaurant's Hollywood roots and location, Columbia Square, which was the home of the first Hollywood-based film production company. "We felt the Oscars provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate both our Hollywood history and our stellar cocktail program," says Paley's head bartender Melina Meza, who helped curate the menu.
"Some people from the team came in pushing for their favorites — Halle Berry’s Elie Saab gown was one of the big ones," according to Meza. To capture the deep magenta color of her dress, the team experimented with varied portions of beet juice. But it was Julia Roberts' black-and-white vintage Valentino that was a favorite of Meza's. "I had to make a cocktail based on it and ideally, one that goes down as smooth as velvet," Meza explains. She adds, "It's garnished with thin white chocolate “stripes” across the rim of the glass to recall the bold white trim that runs down the dress."
Below, take a peek at the specialty drinks being served from 2:30 p.m. to close, and check out a recipe for one of the stylish libations to make at home.
