Overseas b.o. is a real rat race

'Ratatouille' adds $27.7 mil in 3rd week on top

Ranking first in 13 overseas territories including Italy, where it registered a gangbusters opening, "Ratatouille" coasted to No. 1 internationally for the third consecutive weekend, grossing an estimated $27.7 million from 3,793 screens in 33 markets.

The worldwide tally for the Disney/Pixar animation offering is $512.6 million, with $308 million of that from international. That makes it the 11th-biggest grosser in Disney history and the 51st-biggest title all-time industrywide. "Ratatouille," which opened internationally June 28, has completed its overseas run but looms as a dominant factor in holdover markets for several stanzas to come.

Outgrossing the combined totals of the No. 2-No. 5 titles during the weekend by nearly $4 million, the saga of Remy the French rat notched a number of Disney and industry records.

"Ratatouille" is the sixth-biggest-grossing original animation title ever to be released overseas and the ninth-biggest including sequels. It also is the fourth-biggest Disney animation release (behind 2003's "Finding Nemo," 1994's "The Lion King" and 2004's "The Incredibles") and the 48th title (the 10th from Disney) in history to cross the $300 million gross mark internationally.

Finishing at No. 2 for the weekend was Paramount Pictures International's "Stardust," which drew an estimated $8.1 million from 2,214 screens in 48 markets. The adventure-fantasy starring Claire Danes opened in nine territories including the U.K., where it placed No. 2 in the market with an estimated $4 million from 445 situations.

So far, "Stardust" has grossed $42 million overseas.

Tied for third place were Sony/Summit Entertainment's "Resident Evil: Extinction," the third installment of a video game-based sci-fi horror franchise, and Warner Bros. Spain's release of "The Orphanage," each of which grossed an estimated $5.6 million.

"Evil" has accumulated $48.2 million overseas, while "Orphanage" continued its torrid No. 1 market run in just one territory, Spain. The cume for the latter in its second weekend is $15.7 million.

No. 4 was Sony's "Superbad," which pulled an estimated $4.6 million from 1,900 sites in 28 markets for an international cume of $32.2 million. The biggest among its four new markets was Spain, where the teen comedy finished second with an estimated $2.6 million from 351 screens.

Finishing at No. 5 was PPI's "The Heartbreak Kid," starring Ben Stiller, which grossed an estimated $3.7 million from 1,154 screens in nine markets for an international cume of $19.3 million. The Farrelly brothers comedy opened in four territories, the best being the Netherlands ($344,000 from 63 sites).

Summit's "Michael Clayton," starring George Clooney as a law firm fixer, is vying for the No. 1 spot in France and grabbed an estimated $3.1 million overall from 1,112 sites in nine territories for an overseas cume to date of $12.2 million. Its worldwide tally is $34 million.

A quartet of Universal International entries registered similar gross estimates. "The Kingdom" scored an estimated $3 million from 1,530 screens in 22 territories for an overseas cume of $16 million; "Knocked Up" raised its international total to $61.8 million thanks to an estimated $2.8 million weekend at 1,060 screens in 31 markets; "The Bourne Ultimatum" raised its overseas tally to $183.3 million after an estimated $2.7 million weekend from 1,360 screens in 40 territories; and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" produced an estimated $2.5 million from 1,737 screens in 33 markets for an overseas total of $57.5 million.

20th Century Fox International's release of Walden Media's "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising" raised its overseas cume to $6.5 million thanks to an estimated $2.4 million weekend from 1,821 screens. Warner Bros. International's "The Brave One," starring Jodie Foster, grossed an estimated $2.4 million from about 2,000 screens in 46 markets for an overseas cume of $25 million.
