Palm Springs ShortFest Announces Winners
'Carry On' won the best of the festival award, while 'Over' took the grand jury award.
Carry On, a film from Austria directed by Rafael Haider, won the Best of Festival Award at the 2015 Palm Springs International ShortFest, which concludes Monday.
The festival, which screenED 330 short films, handed out prizes in 21 categories at its awards ceremony Sunday evening at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs.
The Grand Jury Award went to Over, by director Jorn Threfall, a film that takes an unconventional approach to illustrating the desperation of one immigrant to the United Kingdom. It also received the second prize in the category of best live action short (15 minutes and under).
The Future Filmmaker Awarded was given to Rafael Aidar of Brazil for Submarine, a drama about an older gay man.
Jordan Ledy’s It’s Better in Italian, a documentary about Italian actors who dub dialog for American movie stars, became a multiple winner, taking the prize for best student film from a U.S. film school, claiming the runner-up prize for best documentary short, and also picking up the student documentary award.
Barbara Cigarroa’s Marta Rose, about a Mexican woman dealing with the death of a child, also took multiple honors: Panavision best North American short and best student live action short (15 minutes and under).
In the animation categories, an entry from Chile called Bear Story, directed Gabriel Osorio was named best animated short, while Soar, directd by Alyce Tuze, was named best student animation. The audience award votes agreed, with Bear Story claiming the Audience Award for best animated short, and Soar taking the runner-up spot.
