'Paradise Lost' Filmmakers React to Release of West Memphis Three

Overnight, the film about the West Memphis Three, who were released Friday in Jonesboro, Ark., has become one of the hottest titles on the fall festival circuit.

Close on the heels of its previously-announced screening at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where the film will have its world premiere, it will play both the New York Film Festival and the Hamptons fest in October.

The movie will then move on to the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, where it will have its European premiere in November.

A follow-up to their 1996 film Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and its 2000 sequel Paradise Lost 2: Revelations, the new film follows the latest developments in the case of the West Memphis Three. It took a dramatic turn on Friday, when Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelly were set free after 18 years in prison for the murder of three eight-year old boys.

Berlinger and Sinofksy, who were on hand for the hearing at which the three were released after new DNA evidence exonerating them surfaced, plan to change the ending of the film, which they had nearly completed, to include the men’s release. While they will not have time to put a new ending on the version of the film that plays Toronto, they hope to have it ready for its New York Film Festival showing, the filmmakers told The Hollywood Reporter.

Paradise Lost 3 is scheduled to air on HBO in January.
