The watchdog group reveals its annual list of brands that strayed from "family friendly" programming over the last season -- and the top 10 it chose to endorse.

Before millions of wallets open on Black Friday, the Parents Television Council has some strong words for the American consumer.

The non-partisan group, which exists to scold the use of profanity and depictions of sex and violence on television, released its annual list of the "best" and "worst" television advertisers on Wednesday.

Based on ad buys during the 2010-2011 television season, measuring spots that aired during "family friendly" programs and those more unappealing to the group, the PTC labeled American Express as the worst offender of the year.

The credit card is followed by companies such as General Motors, Target and McDonald's, with the always subversive Burlington Industries rounding out the top 10.

“This holiday season, the PTC urges every parent, every grandparent and every concerned citizen to show support for those companies whose corporate values are in line with their own," PTC president Tim Winter said in a statement. "Because our children are watching."

It's not all bad news, though. The PTC showed support for most favored advertiser Ford, as well as Visa, Walmart and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The PTC also thanked the worst offenders of 2010 -- YUM! Brands, Unilever USA, CKE Restaurants, Combe Incorporated, AAMCO Transmissions Inc. -- for dropping off the list and heeding their "call to implement more responsible advertising practices."
