This Is How Pat McGrath Does Katy Perry's Eye Makeup
The legendary makeup artist spills all the details on how she enhances the singer's beautiful blues.
If Katy Perry’s latest CoverGirl ad didn’t catch your eye, nothing will. The stunning image features the pop star with bright green hair and matching eye makeup, which makes her blue peepers pop. Conceived and created by sought-after makeup artist Pat McGrath, the look shows off CoverGirl’s latest mascara and, of course, one of Perry’s best assets.
“Katy has gorgeous blue eyes, and for her new CoverGirl campaign, I played up her natural almond eye shape to create an eye look with serious showstopping power,” McGrath tells Pret-a-Reporter. “I was inspired by the recent autumn/winter runways, where we saw winged eyes and pieced-out lashes all over the catwalk.”
McGrath should know, since she works with the boundary-pushing, trendsetting likes of Maison Martin Margiela, Givenchy, Yohji Yamamoto and Alexander McQueen (not to mention runway queens like Cara Delevingne, Christy Turlington and Karlie Kloss).

“For Katy’s look, I used CoverGirl’s new Super Sizer Mascara to create larger-than-life lashes that really put the spotlight on her eyes and then a dramatic winged eye with CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Eyeliner to emphasize her natural shape.” For that vibrant pop of color, McGrath tells Pret-a-Reporter she used “a deep green eye shadow that brought out the fun highlights in her hair.”
Unsurprisingly, she adds, “We had a blast on set together creating the look — it was major!”
