Pathe snaps up UGC Films

LONDON -- French-owned U.K. distribution arm Pathe Distribution has said bonjour to UGC Films U.K., snapping up the label and its back catalog of film titles for an undisclosed sum.

The deal sees Pathe take control of a slew of top-flight foreign-language titles including German pic "Good Bye Lenin!" and French titles "8 Women" and "Swimming Pool."

Pathe said the titles in the library will complement Pathe's existing stable of titles, which includes everything from "Chicken Run" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" to "The Queen" and "Volver."

U.K. indie Pathe Distribution currently aims to release about 20 titles a year and has rights to a catalog of more than 300 films, the company said.

UGC Films closed its U.K. operations a few months ago after French parent company UGC decided it was too expensive to operate here.
