Pathe U.K. Strikes First Look Deal With Hot Brit Start-Up Stigma Films
High concept genre movie projects top of the agenda for fresh pairing.
LONDON – French-owned British-based Pathé U.K. has sealed a first look deal with fresh-faced producer Matt Wilkinson and his production banner Stigma Films.
The aim is to have Wilkinson, a former Working Title Films high flier in the label’s development department, to develop “high concept genre pictures for an international audience.”
One of Wilkinson’s projects recently topped this year’s U.K. Britlist, the U.K.’s answer to Hollywood's Black List of unproduced projects.
The chart topper is a sci-fi horror script penned by Charles Barker entitled The Call Up set in the world of virtual gaming.
The first look deal with Wilkinson will run parallel to Pathé U.K.’s existing producer deal with Christian Colson’s Cloud Eight Films.
Through that deal Pathé co-financed Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours and is currently co-financing Boyle’s Trance.
Pathé U.K. has also hired the services of Bradley Quirk to bolster its creative team.
Quirk has for the past three years worked as story editor and talent tracker at the UKFC/British Film Institute.
Quirk joins Pathé as creative executive, reporting to Colleen Woodcock, Pathé’s head of creative affairs, starting in January 2012.
Pathe U.K. managing director Cameron McCracken said Wilkinson and Quirk “offer an injection of new blood and a very different perspective” to Pathe.
“Through them we hope to reach a wider range of filmmakers and forge a new relationship with a younger audience,” McCracken said.
