Patty Duke's Son Sean Astin Pays Tribute to Late Mother
"We celebrate the infinite love and compassion she shared through her work and throughout her life," he wrote.
Actor Sean Astin on Tuesday shared a touching message and picture over social media about his mother, Oscar winner Patty Duke, who died earlier in the day at age 69.
Duke won a best supporting actress Oscar at age 16 for her performance as Helen Keller in 1962's The Miracle Worker and starred as two cousins on her own sitcom, The Patty Duke Show.
Astin released a statement from the family, that read, in part, "We celebrate the infinite love and compassion she shared through her work and throughout her life."
He also wrote, "Her work endures …" and included a link to a site raising funds for the Patty Duke Mental Health Initiative.
"This initiative will fuel a multi-level approach to achieving results for those suffering with mental illness and their families and communities," Astin wrote on the funding page. "Public awareness campaigns, lobbying efforts and supporting a multitude of mental health programs big and small will be organized, prioritized and vigorously pursued."
Astin is best known for playing Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mikey Walsh in The Goonies and the lead in Rudy.
