10,000 free tickets to the June 4 event will be given away in a ballot and millions more are expected to watch on the BBC in the U.K., with broadcasters including ABC having highlights packages.
Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Lang Lang and Elton John will be part of a line-up of start to perform this summer at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, the BBC and Buckingham Palace said Tuesday.
A lineup of musical stars from the worlds of rock and pop, along with the best of classical music and musical theatre, will perform at concert on June 4 in the presence of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family.
The show will be broadcast by the BBC in the U.K., with highlights airing on ABC June 5.
Staged against the backdrop of the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace, the concert will include classic hits and one-off collaborations from artists including Shirley Bassey, Alfie Boe, Jools Holland, Jessie J, JLS, Annie Lennox, Madness, Cliff Richard and Ed Sheeran, with other artists to be announced closer to the time.
The unique concert stage will be designed by world-renowned architect Mark Fisher, which organizers say will make full use of the historic backdrop with spectacular lighting and projections.
Tickets for the event will be allocated by a national ballot which will select 10,000 members of the public for the free concert from those who enter applications between today and March 2.
“This will be a musical event like no other, with Britain's greatest musical stars performing to celebrate this great occasion,” said Danny Cohen, head of BBC1.
Co-organiser Gary Barlow of “Take That” said the concert would celebrate the 60 years of the Queen’s reign, promising “an amazing line-up of world-class artists,” coming together for the celebration.
“With Buckingham Palace as a backdrop, it's going to be a fantastic event which transcends multiple decades of music. It'll be a great, unique, experience for the thousands attending, watching on TV and listening on radio. I can't wait!”
