Peas cooking with 3 AMAs

Chilis, Blige, Clarkson double up

There was no monkeying around for the Black Eyed Peas: The hip-hop pop stars were the big winners Tuesday at the 2006 American Music Awards, taking three statuettes during the ceremony at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

In their nominated slots, the Peas were 3-for-3 for the night. The group ? which appeared on the 34th annual televised show via satellite hookup from Costa Rica, where they were performing ? won as favorite band in both the soul/R&B and rap/hip-hop categories, while their 2005 Interscope set "Monkey Business" was named favorite rap/hip-hop album.

Los Angeles homeboys Red Hot Chili Peppers, who rode high this year with their two-disc set "Stadium Arcadium," also cut across categories. The punk-funk foursome was named favorite pop/rock band and favorite alternative music artist.

Mary J. Blige, whose "The Breakthrough" was one of the big late-year hits of 2005, reaped two awards. Blige got the nod as favorite female soul/R&B artist, and "The Breakthrough" took favorite soul/R&B album.

"American Idol" favorite Kelly Clarkson took home a pair of nontelevised awards, winning in both her nominated categories as favorite female artist and adult contemporary artist. Clarkson's triumph this year was somewhat surprising, since her most recent album, the 5.6 million-selling "Breakaway," was issued in late 2004.

Another "American Idol" grad, Carrie Underwood, followed up her CMA Horizon Award and female vocalist wins of two weeks ago by taking the favorite new breakthrough artist AMA.

Among several first-time AMA recipients was Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, named favorite male artist for "Unpredictable," his No. 1 album of late 2005. Foxx, who received his Oscar for portraying Ray Charles, said backstage, "The music is what I hold really close to my heart."

The husband-and-wife team of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill triumphed in the country categories, taking favorite album ("Greatest Hits Vol. 2") and favorite female artist, respectively.

Fresh from her quadruple win at the Latin Grammy Awards, Colombian vocalist Shakira added another trophy to the mantle, winning as favorite Latin music artist.

As ever at the AMA ceremony ? which continues to play like a three-hour variety show interrupted by occasional award presentations ? a number of top acts took advantage of the national TV time to push their new or forthcoming releases at the opening bell of the holiday season.

Among the acts on view during the ceremony, televised live on ABC, were Foxx and show opener Beyonce, who star in "Dreamgirls," opening Dec. 25; Tenacious D, who performed the title song from the duo's movie vehicle "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny," which opens today; and Jay-Z, Josh Groban, Gwen Stefani and Snoop Dogg, whose new albums are either just out or due before Christmas.

The show also served as a massive cross-promotional effort by ABC's corporate parent the Walt Disney Co. Its label acts and Disney Channel stars Miley Cyrus of "Hannah Montana," Jesse McCartney, the Cheetah Girls, Aly & AJ and the cast of "High School Musical" all served as presenters (as did former Mouseketeers Britney Spears and JC Chasez).

The AMAs are voted on by a national sampling of 20,000. Nominees were compiled from data supplied by Radio & Records, a sister publication of The Hollywood Reporter. Votes were tabulated by Ernst & Young.

The 2006 AMAs were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The show was produced by Larry Klein for Dick Clark Prods. and directed by Louis J. Horvitz.
