Peter Levinsohn Joins Universal Pictures as President and Chief Distribution Officer

The exec, who had been overseeing new media and digital distribution at Fox, will be in charge of the studio's home entertainment, new media and television distribution.

Peter Levinsohn is joining Universal Pictures as president and chief distribution officer. Reporting to Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson, he will oversee worldwide home entertainment, new media and digital strategy, technology, and international and domestic television distribution.

Levinsohn had been serving as president of new media and digital distribution for Fox Filmed Entertainment.

At Universal, Levinsohn will work alongside Fogelson and co-chairman Donna Langley, who both announced his appointment Wednesday, as well as Universal Pictures president Jimmy Horowitz on all aspects of Universal's business. Levinsohn and Horowitz will share responsibility for Universal's business development and strategic planning division with Horowitz focusing on the production side. Nikki Rocco, president of domestic distribution, will continue to head the company's North American theatrical distribution operations, reporting to Fogelson.

Levinsohn, who has spent most of his career at Fox in various capacities, has been involved in a number of Fox's digital agreements, including partnerships with HBO, Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, Xbox and others.  He has directed all policy decisions regarding digital usage of content and business models.

Prior to heading new media and digital distribution at Fox, Levinsohn was president of Fox Interactive Media, responsible for the day-to day operations and strategy for News Corporation’s Internet businesses,  overseing MySpace, IGN Entertainment, FOXSports.com, AskMen, Photobucket and AmericanIdol.com.  Previous to that, he served as president of worldwide pay television and video-on-demand and as president of digital media for the Fox Entertainment Group. He joined Fox in 1988 as a manager in the international theatrical division.
