Phase 4 Picks Up North American Rights to 'Breaking Point'
As it moves into the pre-buy arena, Phase 4 Films has picked up North American rights to the martial arts thriller Breaking Point, starring MMA fighter Cung Le.
Ham Tran is to direct the feature, produced by Anderson Le, from a script by himself and Collin Chang. Media 8 Entertainment and XYZ Films are executive producing the picture alongside the Vietnam film studio Chanh Phuong Films.
In Breaking, Le will play a former DEA agent and ex-con who returns to Vietnam to become a bodyguard in the midst of a fierce turf war.
An expert in Taekwondo, Vietnamese Kung-fu, wrestling, Thai boxing and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Le earned fame as a MMA fighter before leaving the ring for the movies. He co-starred with Channing Tatum in Fightingand Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in Pandorumand is now working on Wong Kar Wai's new film The Grand Master.
"Phase 4 is firmly committed to getting involved as early as possible with films we believe are compatible to our business model," Phase 4 president and CEO Berry Meyerowitz said. "We are always on the lookout for high-quality films, and acquiring Breaking Pointearly on in the process gives us another avenue to secure the best possible content."
The deal was negotiated on behalf of Phase 4 by Larry Greenberg, senior vp acquisitions, with North American sales rep Nate Bolotin on behalf of XYZ Films.
