Photo finishes for 'Talladega' and 'Prada'
EmptyDVD buyers and renters were in the mood for laughs last week, sending Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and 20th Century Fox's "The Devil Wears Prada" to the top of the national DVD sales and rental charts, respectively.
"Talladega" topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending Dec. 17 despite a strong challenge from last week's top seller, Buena Vista's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which finished a close second.
"Prada" topped Home Media Retailing's video rental chart with an estimated $10.7 million in earnings, but again "Dead Man's Chest" came in at No. 2, with just $70,000 in earnings separating the titles.
The "Pirates" sequel sold 10.5 million DVDs its first week in stores and is on track to become the top-selling live-action DVD ever.
"Prada" finished third on the sales chart, and "Talladega" was the week's No. 3 rental, with $10.4 million.
Two new theatricals from Paramount, "Barnyard" and "World Trade Center," debuted at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, on First Alert.
Two sequels from Buena Vista each sold more than 1 million DVDs in their first week in stores, underscoring the continued popularity of Disney's direct-to-video productions. "Air Buddies" debuted at No. 7 on the sales chart, and "The Fox and the Hound 2" bowed at No. 10.
