PIFF awards 'Scarecrows,' 'Naked'

13th fest closes with record attendance

NEW YORK - "Land of Scarecrows" by Korean director Roh Gyeong-tae and "Naked of Defenses" by Masahide Ichii of Japan won the New Currents Awards at the close of the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea on Friday, organizers said.

The 13th PIFF saw a record screening attendance of 198,818, up by 215 people from 2007. The festival showed a total of 315 films, from a PIFF-record 60 countries, in 827 screenings, each filled to an average 72.3% occupancy.

Accredited guests and press were 11,110, up just over 1% from 2007, and the FIPRECI Award, chosen by film critics, went to "Jalainur" by Chinese director Zhao Ye.
