LONDON -- Pomp, circumstance and -- of course -- fashion took centre stage at the Royal Wedding, where the bride’s choice of a dress by British fashion house Alexander McQueen will catapult designer Sarah Burton into fashion history.

Perhaps the most anticipated celebrity appearance of the ceremony was Victoria Beckham, who chose a sober dark blue boat-necked dress from her own AW11 collection unveiled at New York fashion week in February, combining it with a Phillip Treacy pillbox hat and Christian Louboutin heels.  PHOTOS: What Kate Middleton and famous guests wore to the wedding

Victoria, retaining her trademark grim expression throughout the ceremony, was accompanied by husband David in dark grey Ralph Lauren and wearing his Commander of the British Empire medal pinned to his jacket.

The couple chatted to fellow guests including Guy Ritchie, Elton John and Samantha Cameron, the wife of the British Prime Minister, who continued the theme of modern British designers, wearing a turquoise Burberry with jewels in her hair by ErdemPHOTOS: Kate Middleton and Prince William say "I Do"

Bridesmaid Pippa Middleton also wore a dress designed by Sarah Burton in tandem with her sister’s, looking stunning in slender-fitting heavy ivory satin-based crepe.

But it is the wedding dress that Kate – now the Duchess of Cambridge – wore that will go down in history.

But the choice of designer McQueen ahead of more conservative British designers like Alice Temperley and Jasper Conran was “almost a provocative choice,” royal commentator Andrew Bruce told ITV. PHOTOS: Famous royal weddings

"It has been the experience of a lifetime to work with Catherine Middleton to create her wedding dress and I have enjoyed every moment of it,” Burton said in a statement for the fashion house. “It was such an incredible honor to be asked and I am so proud of what we and the Alexander McQueen team have created.”
