'Pirates' tops holiday DVD lists
Empty'Twas the week before Christmas and in the DVD store, four newly released midrange theatricals each tried to score.
But in the end, it was Buena Vista Home Entertainment's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" that won the hearts of last-minute holiday shoppers to regain the top spot on the national DVD sales chart for the week ending Dec. 24.
The red-hot sequel, also the year's top theatrical performer, returned to the No. 1 position on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart after spending the previous week at No. 2.
In doing so, "Pirates" managed to beat a quartet of new releases: Buena Vista's "Invincible," Warner's "Lady in the Water," 20th Century Fox's "Little Miss Sunshine" and Paramount's "Step Up."
Of those, "Invincible," a come-from-behind sports movie that has been called this year's "Rudy," fared best, bowing at No. 2 on First Alert after earning $57.8 million at the boxoffice.
"Step Up," a story about an unlikely dance duo that grossed $65.3 million in theaters, debuted at No. 3, ahead of the previous week's top seller, Sony Pictures' "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."
"Sunshine," a spoof on children's beauty pageants, came to DVD with a $59.3 million theatrical pedigree and finished sixth for the week, behind another holdover, "The Devil Wears Prada," also from Fox.
"Water," a boxoffice miss from director M. Night Shyamalan, debuted at a lowly No. 13. In theaters, the fantasy grossed a mere $42.3 million. Shyamalan's last film, "The Village," had grossed $114.2 million.
On Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week, "Prada" remained at No. 1. After two weeks in stores, the film has now generated nearly $20 million in rental revenue.
"Sunshine" debuted at No. 2, with estimated rental earnings of $8.8 million. "Invincible" bowed at No. 6 ($6.5 million), "Step Up" came in at No. 9 ($5.2 million) and "Water" bubbled under the top 10 finishers with rental revenue of $4 million to finish at No. 12.
