'Vagina Monologues' Playwright Producing Web Series About Dating Lives of Transgender Women
'Her Story' debuts this fall starring transgender activist Jen Richards, entrepreneur Angelica Ross and writer-actor Laura Zak.
A new web series seeks to explore the dating lives of trans and queer women.
Her Story, a scripted series from Speed of Joy Productions and producer Katherine Fisher, tells the story of two trans women who have all but given up on love when a series of chance encounters give them renewed hope. Trans activist Jen Richards stars as Violet, a women who falls for the reporter (Laura Zak) sent to interview her, while Angelica Ross stars as career-driven Paige who meets James (Christian Ochoa), the first man in years she considers opening up to.
Richars and Zak penned the series, with Sydney Freeland directing. The Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler serves as executive producer on the project.
"Trans women in the media have long been punchlines, killers, indications of urban grit, pathetic tragedies, and dangerous sirens," said Richards. "Rarely have they been complex characters who laugh, struggle and grow; who share strength in sisterhood; who seek and find love."
Added Fisher: "Her Story depicts the unique, complicated and very human women we see in queer communities, and explores how these women navigate the intersections of label identity and love. With this project we have the opportunity to positively shift cultural perceptions of women in the trans and queer communities."
Filming on Her Story wrapped in May and Speed of Joy is eyeing a fall 2015 release. The production company has launched an Indiegogo campaign to cover the costs of post-production and marketing.
