'Prada,' 'Trade Center' tops overseas
EmptyFilms geared to the over-25 audience continue to do well at this time of year, with such titles as "The Devil Wears Prada" and "World Trade Center" leading the overseas boxoffice for a second week in a row. Those entries, along with such newcomers as Martin Scorsese's crime drama "The Departed" and Sony Pictures Animation's "Open Season" added to the positive signs of a recovery of the international boxoffice from the doldrums of 2005.
Foreign distribution studio executives cite an MPA report that indicates that this year's January-September boxoffice at offshore theaters is ahead of 2005's pace by 12%, $6.4 billion to $5.7 billion, and is equal at this time to 2004's record $6.4 billion for the period.
In the U.K. over the weekend, the top three films on the boxoffice chart -- "The Departed," "Prada" and "Open Season" -- earned more than $3 million each at the boxoffice.
In South Korea, where Hollywood offerings have received scant recognition for weeks, "World Trade Center" made the boxoffice chart in the No. 3 position with $1.1 million from 140 screens. At the same time, Oliver Stone's 9/11 drama entered Japan in the No. 1 spot with $2 million from 350 sites.
"Prada," the overseas style-setter for a second weekend, took in $24.6 million from 4,217 screens in 43 markets to raise its international cume to $75.4 million. The Meryl Streep-Anne Hathaway starrer entered Germany with $4.3 million from 559 screens, second to German soccer documentary "Germany: A Summer Fairy Tail," which tallied $5.4 million in its second weekend for a market cume to date of $14.7 million. The 20th Century Fox release came in No. 1 in Italy ($3.7 million), Taiwan ($1.1 million), Greece ($691,000) and Chile ($101,000). Second-weekend holdovers saw "Prada" hit market cumes of $12.6 million in the U.K., $5 million in Spain and $4.5 million in Russia, with France providing $10.3 million and Australia, $9.1 million, both for three weekends each.
"Trade Center" did $10.3 million worth of business from 3,561 screens in 39 countries to raise its international gross to $57.9 million. Italian customers paid $2 million at 325 locations, greeting the disaster drama second to "Prada's" $3.7 million from 437.
Woody Allen remains popular in Italy, with his "Scoop" holding third place in its second weekend with $1 million from 351 screens and a market cume to date of $3.2 million.
Thriller fans are turning out for "The Departed," which took in $7.4 million from about 1,000 prints in 13 markets and hoisted its early international cume to $17 million. The cop film, handled overseas by Warner Bros. and indie Initial Entertainment, open No. 1 in Australia ($2.5 million from 276 prints), Singapore ($306,000 from 33) and Indonesia ($157,000 from 35), while ranking No. 1 for a second weekend in the U.K. ($3.7 million from 364).
As school holidays hit in scattered markets, family animation offerings are again seeking a piece of the boxoffice dollar. Sony Pictures Animation's "Open Season" entered the U.K. with $3.1 million (including previews) before kids get a school breather starting this coming weekend. Another toon contender (via UIP) will be on hand in the U.K. this coming weekend in the form of Paramount/Nickelodeon's "Barnyard." Meanwhile, Mexico greeted "Open Season" in the top spot with $2.3 million from 614 screens, including previews at six Imax theaters.
"Perfume: The Story of a Murderer," Tom Tyker's German-made, English-language thriller, is maintaining a fine pace in holdovers, with the Constantin Film/Summit Entertainment international release grossing an estimated $6.3 million over the weekend from 1,803 screens in six markets to provide a cume to date of $65 million. Five weeks in Germany has delivered $39.7 million to date, with Russia down for $10.2 million so far.
Adam Sandler's "Click," with a $5.6 million weekend from 50 markets, reached a cume of $81.9 million, becoming the comedian's highest-grossing overseas entry ever by beating "50 First Dates," which furnished $75.6 million. "Click" has tallied $7.8 million in nine weeks in Mexico and the same amount in 10 weeks in Brazil.
Kevin Costner-Ashton Kutcher action-adventure "The Guardian," just getting under way overseas, grossed $2.7 million over the weekend from 1,078 screens in nine countries. It opened No. 2 in Spain ($1.5 million) and attained the peak in Sweden ($247,000), the Philippines ($216,000) and Portugal ($187,000). It is set to open this coming weekend in the U.K., Germany and Mexico.
"Step-Up," with overseas markets shared by Summit Entertainment and UIP/Universal, tallied $2.1 million over the weekend from 857 screens in 14 markets. The international cume stands at $13.7 million.
Guillermo del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth," released by Warner Bros., opened No. 1 in Spain with $3.1 million from 296 prints. Previously, a 20th Century Fox release of Spanish local film "Alatriste" took in $21.1 million in seven weeks.
Specialized films also have a chance to shine at this time of the year. Fox Searchlight's "History Boys" opened in the U.K. with $1.5 million from 293 screens, while its "Little Miss Sunshine" racked up an foreign cume of $12.2 million following a $1.9 million weekend on 448 screens in 12 markets. Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" struck an international cume of $60.8 million, while "Fearless" hit $41.6 million and "Silent Hill," $51 million.
