'Pretty Woman' Reunion: Julia Roberts Convinced Richard Gere With Post-it Note (Video)
The cast and director Garry Marshall, gathered together for the first time since 1990, also explain why they didn't make a sequel to the hit film.
Pretty Woman fans know that stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere weren't the first actors considered for their now famous roles in the 1990 rom-com. But they might be surprised to know how Roberts convinced Gere to take the part he still wasn't sure about.
Gere had turned down the part a few times, he said Tuesday on NBC's Today show during the show's reunion interview with the co-stars and director Garry Marshall. Roberts also recalled how she had then lost the job as the film moved to Disney and Marshall was brought on to direct.
But when Marshall got Roberts and Gere together, she helped make the famous pairing happen.
"Garry brought me there," Roberts said, "And he said, 'Richard, Julia. Julia, Richard. I'll see yous later,' and he walked out."
Gere, however, doesn't remember that Marshall brought them together, saying that he "was so mesmerized that I don't remember Garry. I just remember the girl."
What Gere also remembers is Roberts sitting across the desk from him in his New York apartment.
"To be honest, I didn't know if I was doing this movie yet. She's across the desk, we're getting to know each other, we're flirty-flirty, nice-nice," Gere explained. "And [Marshall] calls up and it's kind of like, 'How's it going?' And I'm going, 'Yeah, yeah,' and she takes a piece of paper ['a Post-it,' Roberts interjected]. She turns it around, and she pushes it to me. It said, 'Please say yes.' It was so sweet. And I was like [miming talking on the phone], 'I just said yes.' "
The beloved film was a box office hit, but the cast and Marshall decided long ago that there would only be one Pretty Woman.
"We made a pact a long time [ago] — when we did it," Marshall said. "We said, we're not doing Pretty Woman 2 unless we all do it together."
"We're happy to announce," Roberts teased, before she and Marshall concluded, in unison, "We didn't do it."
