"The love we shared, the music he made and our life together is forever engraved in my heart," she said.

Toronto-born Manuela Testolini, who was married to Prince for five years to 2006, on Friday said she is building a school to honor the memory of the iconic music artist after he was found dead at his recording studio in Minnesota on Thursday.

"I just reached out to him a few days ago to let him know that I was building a school in his honor. My heart aches that the school will now be built in his memory," Testolini said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. Prince during the early 2000s kept a home in Toronto after marrying Testolini in 2001.

"Prince and I had a magical journey together and I loved him immensely," she wrote. "The world knew him as a musical genius  I knew him as a husband, friend and fierce philanthropist," Testolini, who today runs the In a Perfect World Foundation in Los Angeles, added.

Prince and Testolini met in his native Minneapolis when she worked for his charitable foundation. They lived  in Toronto's wealthy Bride Path district, and Prince recorded his Musicology album in part at studios in Toronto and Mississauga.

During the five years they were married, Prince was often spotted in Toronto nightclubs and at Toronto Raptors basketball games.

Here's Testolini's full statement: "Prince and I had a magical journey together and I loved him immensely. The world knew him as a musical genius  I knew him as a husband, friend and fierce philanthropist. Philanthropy brought us together and it was Prince who encouraged me to start my own charity over 10 years ago. I just reached out to him a few days ago to let him know that I was building a school in his honor. My heart aches that the school will now be built in his memory. His passing leaves me with such a devastating feeling of pain and loss. The love we shared, the music he made and our life together is forever engraved in my heart. I will always love and respect him. I am heartbroken beyond words.”
