'Prometheus' Knocks 'Avengers' From No. 1 on Home Entertainment Charts

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment captured the top spot on both national sales charts the week ending Oct. 14 with Prometheus, the sci-fi adventure that grossed $126.5 million during its summer theatrical run.

The film bumped the previous week’s best seller, Walt Disney Studios’ The Avengers, to No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall discs sales at all key retailers except Walmart and Sam’s Club, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Prometheus plays right into Blu-ray Disc’s core demographic, so it isn’t surprising that a whopping 76% of total unit sales came from the high-definition disc format.

Warner’s Rock of Ages, a musical set in the 1980s Hollywood music scene, debuted at No. 3 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The No. 4 spot on both charts went to Universal Studios’ E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, making its Blu-ray Disc debut. Rounding out the First Alert top five was Disney’s Cinderella, which slipped three spots from No. 2 the prior week. Cinderella finished the week at No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart after debuting at No. 2 the week before.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, the No. 1 spot went to Universal Studios’ Snow White and the Huntsman, fresh off its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox. The Avengers slipped to No. 2, while the Universal comedy The Five-Year Engagement, which came off its holdback last week, crept up one notch to No. 3 from No. 4 the previous week.
